Woodstock police officers shot and wounded a man Thursday evening after he threatened to shoot anyone who came near him, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. Two officers were also hurt.
The Woodstock Police Department asked the GBI to investigate. The details below come from the GBI’s release of Oct. 23 and are, in the bureau’s words, preliminary.
What the GBI said happened
- At about 6:48 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, Woodstock officers answered a suspicious person call near Paden Street and Maple Street.
- Officers found a man in a retention pond. The GBI said he threatened to shoot anyone who approached him.
- He then said he was going to start shooting and made a sudden movement, the GBI said. Officers shot at him and hit him.
- Officers pulled him out of the pond. Woodstock and Cherokee County firefighters treated him at the scene.
The man is 38 and from Roswell, about 10 miles southeast. He was taken to an area hospital, where the GBI said he was in stable condition. The bureau has not said he has been charged with anything, so we are not naming him.
The two officers had injuries that were not life-threatening, the GBI said. They were treated at an area hospital. The release does not say how they were hurt or name them.
What happens next
The investigation is active, the GBI said. When agents finish, the case file goes to the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review. The circuit covers Cherokee County.
The release does not say whether a weapon was found. We will update this page when the bureau or the Police Department says more.
